The Calstock Shortmat Bowls Club is in need of new members.
Over the last few years, the number of members and players has steadily dwindled, and the club is currently seeking some new blood to ensure a strong future.
Club president Brian Jackman has been advertising around the village for many months, and encourages anyone who would like to join to come forward, explaining that the club is open to all. Brian said: ‘We’re at least four members short, right now we’re just scraping through with nine in the whole club. We’re currently playing in the winter league, which requires a minimum of nine players but we need more if others are unavailable. People have moved away or left for health reasons and it’s been difficult to find new members, so we’re putting the word out. A few years ago we had at least 15-20 members. I’ve been playing for 20 odd years now and I fear if the club has to shut down then it won’t come back.’
The club meets on Monday and Wednesday at Calstock Village Hall, with league matches taking place on a Monday evening.
Brian said: ‘It’s not just for people in Calstock, we have players from Gunnislake and Harrowbarrow with us too and it’s open for anyone of any age. After the league finishes in March we’re going to discuss our direction going forward. Those that come and give it a go very often like it and stick with it - that’s how I started!’
