On Friday, Tavistock Rugby Football Club hosted their first quiz night of the year with over 100 in attendance at the social evening ranging from players, supporters, sponsors and a good representation from Whitchurch Cricket Club.

The club made over £400 and decided to donate 50% of the takings to the Tavistock food bank.

l Elsewhere, Tavistock’s Moorlanders made the journey to Old Plymothian & Mannamedian (OPM) Jesters.

The Moorlanders started the day struggling to get front row cover but they travelled with a squad ready to do a job.

A delayed kick off allowed more time for players to potentially become available. The match started with 10 a side with a handful of Tavistock players prepared to change sides and support where necessary.

The Moorlanders started strong off the kick off with a strong run from Ollie Plumber to dot down but the conversion was missed. Tavi went 10-0 up straight from the kick off again with a powerful run form Sean Donnelly; conversion missed again and another break away try from the stand-in hooker Ash Toll with this being converted.

The Moorlanders, although with a lack of structure due to the nature of the game, did their best to hold it and had quite a few passages of play uninterrupted from the hosts. Not long after there was a great play on the left which built a strong platform for the captain, John McGarry, to go round the outside and dot down under the posts and convert his own try. Another two tries, one each for Donnelly and Chris Watts, made the score 31-0 with 20 mins played.

OPM Jesters managed to claw a try back just after half time when the numbers managed to go up to 13-a-side with a great run from their number 13 taking a hard line and breaking away to score, unconverted.

This was then followed up with another try for their 10, Corbin Turner, again unconverted.

The structure that the Moorlanders were used to really came into play now the numbers were available. The plays were called more confidently now and allowed number 10 Chris Watts to run the field and players to back him up with the moves he had the vision for.

The Moorlanders, not wanting to let this become too much of a habit, scored through the irresistible centre Andrew Yates again unconverted.

OPM then returned the favour again. With the score then reading 36-19, Ash Toll managed an intercept to touch down under the posts and converted his own try.Finishing off the scores was a lovely try for Sean Donnelly making it his third for the day and confidently converted by Prop forward Tony.

The main thing for the day was that rugby was played, so Tavi worked with OPM to make this happen and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
